Trashed! TR Beach Littered with Debris

Take action: Beach cleanup Saturday at Theodore Roosevelt Park beach.

The rocky beach looks serene from a distance.

The Town of Oyster Bay-run Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park is manicured, well kept. And yet its iconic beach is awash in trash. Stare a little harder and you'll see the environmental impact all the crowds bring.

A beer bottle top, broken glass and a disposable lighter are a few of the dangerous items this reporter found during a recent walk along the water's edge in Oyster Bay.

None of the items photographed were staged. They were recorded as they were found.

It's unclear how much of the trash arrived on the rising tide or was left by careless visitors.

How you can help: An annual beach cleanup is scheduled for Saturday at 8 a.m.

The Town of Oyster Bay, Oyster Bay Sail & Power Squadron, North Oyster Bay Baymen's Association and Friends of the Bay are jointly coordinating the effort locally.
