The New York State Business and Marketing Honor Society was established by the Business Teachers Association of New York State in an effort to recognize and honor those students who have shown excellence in the area of business education. With the expansion of business electives at Oyster Bay High School, the students have the opportunity to explore a variety of business vocations.

Considering the size of the school and the department’s sole teacher, Ms. Tara Beal, the course offerings exceed those of much larger schools in the area. This year, a total of fourteen courses are being offered to 9 – 12th graders with the opportunity to earn college credits through Farmingdale State College through four of the courses. The majority of students who take a business course continue on to take multiple courses and sincerely express an interest in pursuing a career in the business world.

Since business is the number one major in most colleges in the United State and abroad, the Oyster Bay-East Norwich community, is helping to better prepare our students for success at the collegiate level as well as in their futures.

To become a member of the New York State Business and Marketing Honor Society, one must meet the following requirements:

  • Students must be in their Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year
  • in High School
  • Students must have an 85 overall High School Average
  • Students must have a 90 overall Business course average
  • Students must have a total of 3 full credits in business
  • education by graduation (each course offers students ½
  • credit, so they must complete 6 different courses to fulfill this
  • requirement)

Once a student has been accepted by a special committee, they must fulfill obligations. The must plan and execute an annual fund raising event. The students of this honor society hosted a Cupid’s Ball dance at the Life Enrichment Center of Oyster Bay (formerly known as the Doubleday Babcock Center). Each student was given a specific role to help make the event possible. Students were challenged to sell advertising space in the program, collect donations from local businesses, and acquire merchandise, gift certificates, and gift baskets from local merchants to be raffled during the dance. The students did an amazing job pulling this together and created a memorable event for the senior citizens of
the Oyster Bay-East Norwich community.

Members must also compete in at least one business competition that is available for students. Competitions available to students this school year include the Young Professionals Chamber of Commerce Business Competition. This event took place on November 28, 2012. Over 25 students went to Farmingdale State College to compete in over ten different categories of events including graphic design, advertising, fashion marketing, sports marketing, sports management, sales demonstration, entrepreneurship, job interview skills, travel and tourism, and hospitality. This experience was extremely beneficial for all students that attended.

The second competition will take place on April 17, 2013. It is the Nassau County Comptroller’s Entrepreneurial Challenge. A group of students from both the Honor Society and the Entrepreneurship class will attended this competition at the Nassau County Theodore Roosevelt Legislative & Executive Building in Mineola. For this challenge, students in groups of five were delegated roles such as Chief Executive Officer, Vice president of Operations, Vice President of Finance, Vice President of Marketing, and General Council. As a team, students need to come up with an idea to start a business in Nassau County.

After selecting an industry to enter into, students must create a full-fledged business plan to be presented to a panel of judges made up of both Nassau County politicians and prominent industry professionals. Students have already begun work on this project and are extremely excited about this opportunity.

Membership in the New York State Business and Marketing Honor Society is a great addition to any college application as well as job resumes and applications.
