Treatment Plant Problems Overshadow County Honorees

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced Wednesday that the New York State Professional Engineering society (NYSPE) has honored two county employees for their work during and since Hurricane Sandy. NYSPE also named the West Shore Road seawall reconstruction “Project of the Year.”

Despite recent troubles at the Sandy-stricken Bay Park Wastewater Treatment Plant, Nassau County Department of Public Works Deputy Commissioner Richard Millet was named NYSPE’s “Citizen of the Year” for his role in coordinating the efforts to restore operations to the plant, which was paralyzed by a nine-foot wall of water.

The announcement comes after a May 9 incident during which three million gallons of wastewater spilled for an hour into Reynolds Channel from the Bay Park Plant after a power outage.

NYSPE also named Donna Boyle as “Engineer of the Year” for her work in leading the reconstruction of the West Shore Road seawall. In addition, West Shore Road was named the organization’s “Project of the Year.”

Following Hurricane Sandy’s damage, Mangano issued an emergency order to begin the West Shore Road and seawall reconstruction project. The county executive mandated the road and seawall reconstruction be a top priority and the project is on schedule to be completed by the July 4.
