Town Sees 2,000 Tax Bills Returned
All school tax bills have been mailed, but many undeliverable.
The Town of Oyster Bay has received more than 2,000 returned bills from the U.S. Postal Service indicating the bills’ mailing address is undeliverable.
Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich said all 2013-2014 school tax bills have been mailed to homeowners of record. But the 2,000 returned bills have undeliverable for a variety of reasons. They include:
- Not deliverable as addressed
- Unable to forward
- Refused by addressee
- Addressee not known
- Not deliverable, vacant property
“If your property taxes are not being paid through an escrow account, and you did not receive a tax bill, you must call our office (at 624-6400) to correct your billing address,” Stefanich said. “Taxes are due by Nov. 12, after which late fees will be added."
"Our inability to send you a bill does not excuse your obligation to pay your taxes, or if paid after the due date, any applicable late penalties.”

It is not immediately clear whether this is a normal phenomenon when tax bills go out or something unusual has happened. The number of abandoned homes and destroyed homes following Hurricane Sandy may be a contributing factor, town officials said.

Residents may view current tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check payment or credit card. Please be aware there is a service fee for paying taxes online (Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of fee).
Leaf Collection Begins Nov. 4
The town’s leaf collection program is scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 4. and runs through Dec. 6.
Bagged leaves will be picked up on residents’ regular S.O.R.T. recycling collection days by the combined forces of the Department of Public Works-Sanitation & Recycling Collection Division and the Highway Department.
The Highway Department will also pick up bagged leaves in unincorporated areas that do not receive Town sanitation every Monday for the duration of the leaf collection program.
Residents should place their bagged leaves at the curb with their other recyclables.
