Residents Plead for Post-Sandy Guidance

North and south shore Town of Oyster Bay residents speak out.

Three months after the Town of Oyster Bay survived Hurricane Sandy, residents are pleading with officials to remember the victims who continue to rebuild after the storm.

Drew Bergman, whose Massapequa home was severely damaged in the hurricane, pleaded with the board for answers and guidance regarding the complicated requirements and limitations of house jacking.

Flood zone residents who do not raise their house a certain amount above the flood level are susceptible to up to $9,000 in annual insurance bills, said Bergman. However, with height restrictions and codes placed on the area, he and others were led to believe they might have to flatten their roofs to compensate.

While grants and funds are in place to help with such repairs, grants are not awarded easily, said Bergman, whose personal home reconstruction and house jacking would cost over $100,000.

With little grant money and extensive repairs, Bergman said the many in his neighborhood have simply given up.

"Massapequa was the little engine that could…Now on every block, some houses are abandoned where they just turned the key and walked away," said Bergman, who became emotional when he described a heartbreakingly lightless Christmas. Bergman has had to relocate to a trailer as his home is unlivable.

Supervisor John Venditto and Bergman agreed that the helplessness of those on the south shore has been masked by a tough and resilient perception of the area.

"Everybody thinks we can do it ourselves, and they also think we're all very wealthy, which we are not," said Venditto. "There's a perception that somehow, we don't need help."

While the most severely damaged area in is on the south shore, former Bayville Mayor Victoria Siegel asked that the board not forget the northern side of the Town.

"Since [Hurricane Sandy] we haven't observed anyone coming around to make an assessment of the damage, there hasn't been any cleanup along the road, the drains have not been cleaned out, and the wetlands are filled with debris," she said of the West Harbor Drive area.

FEMA funding will not reach the Bayville municipality for up to 10 years, according to Siegel.

"Having gone through storms before…I understand the process," she said. "However, we can't wait 10 years to have the remediation done along the shoreline" and risk a repeat of West Shore Road.

More information and guidance are one step toward helping rebuild, said Bergman, who said he attended eight of Legislator Dave Denenberg's port-hurricane seminars.

"It's like they're seniors in high school, and we're in kindergarten; we're just learning stuff now," he said, suggesting the Town begin seminars to explain the money victims can get, can't get, and how to go about applying for it.

"One thing you can always count on is that the Town of Oyster Bay will always do right by its residents," Venditto reassured. "It doesn't mean we're perfect, but we will always be there."

No thanks to Congressional Republicans. They left this area to swing in the wind. Let them all choke on their tea.

Republicans can't figuire out why they are vanishing from the American political landscape. Rememer their response to Sandy when you vote. A vote for a Republican is a vote to let YOURSELF twist in the wind if chance fate frowns on YOU.

Although i hope everybody's life gets back to normal soon, i truely believe you that chose to live next to the water should sit back, relax, wait, and keep your mouths shut.
It is and has always been common sense a storm will hit our area and flood zones you all know you are in. You want to live next to the water you will one day pay the price. Now the rest of us, the realistic people who dont live in the bragging rights area's will have to pay the price in our own taxes so some of you can take advantage of the system and get your houses redone.
Beth Henry February 6, 2013 at 01:31 pm
Bragging rights areas? Really? You are as delusional as the rest of the country who think we asked for and could afford this mess we got. First of all do you realize the water went all the way to Merrick Rd which isn't next to the water? And for the people who live on the water they pay flood insurance and just want their houses fixed. We pay insurance for a reason-if it floods we get the necessary money to fix it. People on the water aren't surprised they flooded, they are shocked at the slap in the face we are getting and the fight we are in to get what we deserve and paid for.

Brainless and heartless. Double trouble, 0916. Does your cruel calculus apply to the flood plains of the Mississippi River, the Gulf Coast, or the fault lines of the West? My guess is that if you can gloat over the misery of your countrymen, you are more than happy to do it.
E Pluribus Unum. Check your wallet and then Wikipedia. You may not understand, but it is worth investigating. Perhaps your embarrassing and asinine comments might next time be better deleted than put on display for all to see, and let others see you for what you are.
michael mirra February 6, 2013 at 02:01 pm
Remember what I said about Republicans. I bet 0916 is a Republican. Some of the well to do people on the waterfront may be Republicans too, but this is different. this is THEIR hardship. It may open some eyes to the heartlessness of People that feel they aren't their brother's keeper.

How dare you make that comment! I paid much more to live near the water than you have and have paid for flood insurance all these years, knowing that if that day came; I would be protected. That day has come and I am not protected. I am totally disgusted by other residents who thing we're rich and don't need the money.

That fight does not belong in gonernment! It belongs with the insurance companies that charge you for thje extra protection you pay for! I f it comes to governm, ent and us as tax payers! take the money and move so that we tax payers don't have to invest in that unstable liability!
enyduke February 6, 2013 at 02:28 pm
No it's the heartlessness of people who mwish to live in this liability and expect the rest of the country tasxpayers bare their burden! Your fight is with your insurance companies and not the public or political parties or even Politics ! It's your problem and you deal with it!
enyduke February 6, 2013 at 02:37 pm
T.O.B. John Venditto is the best yet!

As a lifelong Democrat, I think your statement is a little biased and inaccurate. Yes, the House Republicans delayed approval for several weeks because they wanted to remove some of the pork. But, after the Republicans approved it, the Senate Democrats also took another three weeks to pass the measure. So, if you want to blame the Republicans for the delay, you must also blame our Democrats for delays.
Michael Taustine February 6, 2013 at 03:43 pm
There was the Christmas Break and Inauguration that delayed the Senate after the Republicans played their waiting game. Not happy about those delays either. But even after all that, the House Republicans still had dozens that voted against the aid. Not defensible in any way. Even Gulf Coast republicans from Katrina-land voted against it. Evil idealogues.
Michael Taustine February 6, 2013 at 03:47 pm
What about the sewage plant that was wrecked, or the electric grid? It's not just the insurance companies, though they are indefensible. Take your head out of your rear and use some common sense.
michael mirra February 6, 2013 at 05:17 pm
It's THEIR problem? Let THEM deal with it? Americans don't leave our needy to twist in the wind. Maybe Republicans do, but I said AMERICANS don't leave their needy to twist in the wind.
The Republican motto is that they are not their brother's keeper. Most of them lean toward Christianity, so I would remind them who said, "what you do to the least of mine, you do unto me" Don't think you are "saved" because you say Grace & pray. There is a God & he frowns on turning your back on your neighbor as well as a deaf ear.
Cosmo February 6, 2013 at 05:55 pm
What a stupid comment from I am sure a stupid individual. Nobody is looking for a handout or you to pay for their repairs. People paid high premiums for flood insurance to cover damage. Now FEMA is dragging their feet. If a tree feel on your roof you would expect your insurance company to pay for it not a government handout.
Cosmo February 6, 2013 at 06:04 pm
NO FEMA issues flood insurance. They ran out of money and had to get funded to pay claims.
Beth Henry February 7, 2013 at 02:58 am
It is absolutely the government- flood insurance is all under NFIP! It's government run!!!!!
Danielle N. February 7, 2013 at 06:17 am
OK, 1st of all, I've so much "damage-control" to do on here from others that it won't even all fit into just one of these boxes, so you'll be seeing at least two boxes worth of "comments", one right after the other to continue, from me on here! ...
What is w/ this anti-Republican crap? Obv. you're so biased & ignorant it wouldn't matter what I say on here for you to "get it". & aren't the Democrats the ones who all I hear talk about is that "We need Bi-Partisanship from everyone...blah blah blah"?! & isn't the "Leader" of this country, which in case any of you &/or HE forgot, includes NEW YORK (which ALSO includes L.I.) a Democrat?! Where is HE, oh yes, & our Democratic Governor, & what are they doing about all this? & just as a side-note, you may want to do a little research or go take a quick road-trip over to New Jersey & see what a difference is going on over there-& in case you want to know why & how just ask anyone who lives there-its bc of their "No-nonsense-taking", prideful, unstoppable, & "fighting for every one of his N.J. residents" Governor (& he's a REPUBLICAN)! & if memory serves me correct, wasn't it our Republican President at the time of Hurricane Katrina the one who got BLASTED along with FEMA for not doing enough fast enough? It's so funny to me how one-sided (& did I mention IGNORANT yet?!) so many people can be w/ politics, but I guess by now I'm quite used to it. (T.B.C.)...
Danielle N. February 7, 2013 at 06:34 am
CONTINUED... & I thought it'd be quite important to "clue you in" about one of the ONLY people/politicians (who by the way represents not only N.Y., not only L.I., but specifically Massapequa & its surrounding areas), who's fought "tooth-&-nail" & "wouldn't take NO for an answer" to get the state of N.Y. the billions of dollars in aid we so badly needed & deserved BY LAW, which we'd still be waiting for if it weren't for him, & his name is PETER KING-& he's a REPUBLICAN! So obv. next time you want to put blame on specific people & feel the need to be political (& Partisan) about it, just as a suggestion, you may want to do some research 1st so that you DON'T come off as ignorant, one-sided, & bitter as you do...& then maybe you"ll have your FACTS straight at least? & just as a suggestion, esp. bc I strongly believe in freedom of speech & obv. anyone can have their own opinion, at least be correct & factual about what you're putting on "blast"! & this is coming from a "deals only w/ the facts" person to others who just stick to one-sided (their side!), "hear what we want to hear", "blame who we want to blame", incorrect info., closed-minded "ranting". & finally, another assumption you def. don't want to make is that I am only referring to Democrats/Liberals bc I def. am NOT! I say the same thing to every person who wants to take that chance & take a political stance on any issue...!

enyduke February 8, 2013 at 02:43 am
But your house is not built on the water! Those that are pay higher insurance and the rest of us should not pay for their damages as they chose to live there! Their problem their investment and choice of Insurence! The rest of us are not going to pay orf risky properties! thasts why they buy and pay more insurance and taxes as to the value of their houses!

You are more than a bit obtuse, pal. Kind of incoherent. I don't follow what you are trying to say.

FEMA natl flood insurance sucks big time. I've paid flood insurance premiums for the past 20 yrs now my mom has pd for 50+ yrs. Unfortunately, NFIP assigns dimwit adjusters from unregulated ins cos that try to lowball estimates & take advantage of policyholders. I am taking a stand and not taking any adjuster BS. Bring it on ..cause ur going down adjuster from down south.
michael mirra February 10, 2013 at 10:28 pm
Democrats havn't done anything & that is wrong, but Republicans actually voted agaist giving aid to these people.
I don't like democrats either. They talk a good game, but they lean too far to the right. Obama is really a centerist Republican in disquise. Give me Dennis Kusinich for a decent Democrat.
