Free, Eclectic Performances Planned for April

Town's "Distinguished Artists" series announces six free shows at local libraries.

Chamber music, international song from Sri Lanka and classical Americana are some of the musical themes highlighting the upcoming slate of “Distinguished Artists” concerts series set for April, theTown of Oyster Bay announced.

"The performances scheduled for April 2013 serve to illustrate how truly global the musical interests of the residents in our town are," said Councilman Joe Pinto. "Some truly noteworthy performers have been lined up throughout this month, and I encourage residents to take full advantage of this free program.” 

There are six performances scheduled at local libraries; they are:

Sunday, April 7; Traditional violin and piano duo featuring Sarah Geller; 2 p.m. at the Locust Valley Public Library, 170 Buckram Road, Locust Valley:

Saturday, April 13; Cross Island presents an evening of eclectic chamber music featuring cello, piano, and clarinet; 8 p.m. at the Plainview Old-Bethpage Public Library, 999 Old Country Road, Plainview.

Sunday, April 14New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players perform songs and scenes in concert dress with props; at 2 p.m. at the Hicksville Public Library, 169 Jerusalem Ave., Hicksville. (To see a 30-second clip that will make you smile, click here.)

Sunday, April 21; Vocalist Gretchen Farrar and pianist Alexander A. Wu present a classical program of Americana classics; 2 p.m. at the Farmingdale Public Library, 116 Merrits Road, Farmingdale.

Saturday, April 27; Eranga and Prianga will treat residents to international songs and culture from Sri Lanka; 8 p.m. at the Syosset Public Library, 225 South Oyster Bay Road, Syosset.

Sunday, April 28; The Homegrown String Band will perform acoustic country music and Appalachian flatfoot dancing to the Massapequa Public Library, Bar Harbour Building, 40 Harbor Lane, Massapequa Park.

The “Distinguished Artists” concert series is sponsored by the Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services. Anyone interested in obtaining a schedule of free concerts should call 797-7900.
