A tax deadline extension has been approved by the governor for school districts within the Town of Oyster Bay.
Receiver of Taxes James Stefanich announced the 21-day extension for all school districts within the township at the Town Council's meeting Tuesday.
“Residents throughout the Town of Oyster Bay and beyond have been affected by the devastating events of Hurricane Sandy,” Stefanich said in a statement. “These last few weeks have truly been the definition of extraordinary circumstances, and so the Governor has taken the appropriate measures to extend the deadline through Executive Order, so as not to penalize those who have been affected by forces beyond their control.”
The governor has signed an order that only includes districts which have opted for the extension. So far, two districts have yet to opt in: Roslyn School District and North Shore School District.
The Executive Order may be amended to include those districts at a later date, the Town said.
Accordingly, residents of the Town's exempt school districts may pay their school taxes without penalty until Dec. 4.
