Lifeguard Recounts Tragedy at Ransom Beach

Jennifer Schieferstein helped aid toddler who was hit with fence.

Jennifer Schieferstein sat quietly on a curb under a gray sky in the calm Ransom Beach parking lot Tuesday afternoon, occasionally surveying a nearby set of picnic tables. Less than 24 hours before in that exact spot, the recent James Madison University graduate's afternoon walk with her mother and dog turned into a rescue attempt.

Schieferstein, 21 of Locust Valley, was on a quiet walk with her mother and mini collie Hope at the beach when she suddenly heard screams. 18-month-old Philip Amico, route: {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"show", :id=>"police-id-boy-struck-by-fence-at-beach"} --> had been playing near a detached chain link fence nearby
