Landscaper Killed by Falling Tree in Muttontown

Muttontown officer hurt in attempt to free victim.

A landscaper was killed Friday by a falling tree at a Muttontown home and a police officer was hurt trying to free him,  authorities said.

The 53-year-old landscaper was working at a home on Ironwood Road, off Route 106 in Muttontown when he was struck by the falling tree just after noon Friday, Nassau Police said.

Muttontown Police, Jericho firefighters and Nassau police responded and found the victim unconscious with obvious injuries to his left leg and bruising to his chest and back, police said.

He was removed from beneath the tree and transported by Jericho Fire Department Ambulance to Syosset Hospital. The man was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m.

During the attempt to free the victim, a Muttontown Police Officer was struck by a separate tree limb, police said. The officer was struck in the head and sustained abrasions. He was transported to Syosset Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Additional police have been called to the scene for an investigation into the cause of the accident.
