DA: Man Gets 1 Year in Jail for Sex With 13-Year-Old

Bayville man was charged with raping 13-year-old from Glen Cove that he courted on Facebook.

A Bayville man will spend up to one year in prison for luring a 13-year-old from Glen Cove on Facebook and having sex with her, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced Tuesday.

Tereso Ruiz-Hernandez, 25, of Bayville, was sentenced Monday to one year behind bars by Judge Angelo Delligatti. Ruiz-Hernandez will be registered as a Level 2 sex offender when released and was issued a Stay-Away Order of Protection against his victim, Rice said. He pleaded guilty to second-degree rape and second-degree criminal sexual act in March.

"Social networks can offer a positive experience but this case illustrates the potential dangers of using them, as well," Rice said. "Predators often target their victims from behind the cloak of the Internet but my office will continue to do both preventative education and vigorous prosecutions to protect the public."

Special Victims Detectives said Ruiz-Hernandez arranged to meet a 13-year-old girl he met on Facebook. He reportedly drove with his victim in his 2011 Nissan Maxima and engaged in sexual activity with her during their meetings in "dark and secluded" areas, Det. Sgt. Robert Matadero said after Ruiz-Hernandez's arrest.

The victim's parents had "no knowledge" of the conversations "and yet she met that individual in the middle of the night," Matadero said. Watch video of Matadero's statements here.
