Peter Walden Sr., a freelance photographer who contributed news photos to Patch, Newsday and many other New York media publications, died Saturday.

The Greenlawn resident died at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, three days after he turned 61.

Walden was known for his ability to quickly get to the scene of accidents, fires and other breaking news situations and to produce photos and information that told the story.

“Peter Walden went to Asharoken as Hurricane Sandy raged and brought back dramatic photos from the sea wall,” Patch Regional Editor Jason Molinet said. “He ran to crime scenes and car accidents and helped document life on Long Island. He wanted to be where the action was and became a trusted Patch photographer.”

He maintained a rapport with law-enforcement officials and others that helped him stay on top of developing stories.

He is survived by his son, Peter Jr., daughter, Michelle, grandson Brendan, two brothers, Ricky of Charlottesville, Va., and Kenny of Columbia, S.C., his sister, Terri, of Minnesota, and his stepmother, Dale, of Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like a donation to be made to the Long Island Center of Photography in memory of Peter Walden Sr.
