Services were conducted Saturday for David Allen Carl, 61, an Oyster Bay native and descendant of a family with deep roots in the community.

Carl was born June 10, 1951 and died May 28.

He was a direct descendant of one of the oldest African-American and Native American families in Oyster Bay, and named for his great-grandfather, David Carll who served in the Civil War.

The family's roots in Oyster Bay go back to the mid-1700s and were explored in the NBC  show “Who Do You Think You Are,”  featuring his cousin, Vanessa Williams in February 2011.

He won numerous honors in basketball and track in high school and later won MVP for basketball at SUNY Old Westbury, where he earned his bachelor of arts degree. In 2005, David and his eldest brother Frank were inducted into the Oyster Bay Athletic Hall of Fame.

In 1998, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which forced him to retire from the Nassau County Probation Department/Juvenile Detention.

He was buried at Pine Hollow Cemetery after a service at Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Arrangements were handled by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home.

Cards and donations are welcome , sent to the Carl Family, PO Box164 East Norwich 11732.
