Nor'easter Brings High Wind Warning

Gusts up to 60 mph, coastal flooding and wintry mix possible across Long Island Wednesday.

A nor'easter bearing down on Long Island Wednesday threatens to cause even more pain to the region’s already-damaged power infrastructure.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for Nassau and Suffolk counties from 1 p.m. to Thursday 4 a.m. The warning calls for damaging winds from the north at 25-35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.

The winds are capable of downing trees and power lines, the NWS warned.

This comes nine days after Hurricane Sandy ripped through the region, flooding South Shore communities and knocking out power to more than 900,000 customers. LIPA reports 86,197 outages remain in Nassau and 70,360 more in Suffolk.

“Customers should expect that this storm could cause additional damage in our area, resulting in additional power outages,” LIPA announced on its website. “LIPA is preparing its operations to respond to the potential impact of this storm, and will continue to deploy its significant workforce to address any additional power outages.”

Coastal flooding is also possible in areas already suffering from Sandy’s storm surge. The NWS warned of a 3-foot tidal surge and 8-12-foot waves capable of causing even more beach erosion. A Storm Warning is in effect for the waters surrounding the region.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano's office said: "The County Executive reminds residents that an Evacuation Order remains in effect for those residing in coastal flood zones and encourages them to take shelter in a family or friends home or in one of the County’s public shelters."

Nassau opened several shelters Wednesday in anticipation of the storm.

The forecast calls for a rain-to-snow mix arriving after 11 a.m.

Does anyone know why Nassau County Haz Mat was at Cow Bay Contracting yesterday?? Patch please confirm and find out why. Thanks, it could be a danger to the people on Harbor Raod.

Mary, Patch is working on a story regarding that. Thank you.

The Village of Patchogue has done a great job at getting rid of a lot of garbage, but why are all the leaves , branches and cut up trees still doing in the street? With the upcoming storm with high winds and storm surge, all the garbage will now become projectiles and will float everywhere. I feel like they could have cleaned up the areas known to flood first.

does anyone know where to get gas in Hampton Bays?
Bobbie Hurley November 7, 2012 at 06:45 pm
We were without power for 8 days here in North Babylon and not one person, Patch, Newsday, LIPA, NO ONE mentioned us. I live on a block with elderly people and I myself have emphysema and need my breathing maching on bad days. I have four pets and will not leave them. Yes that is my choice you say. But why are we forgotten here. Yes THANK GOD we got our power back now with this recent storm? If we lose power again, is anyone going to come on our block. By the way, streets around the corner had power. We are on Rhoda Avenue between Parkdale and Gracie.

Try gasbuddy.com (worked GREAT for us yesterday!) / Hessexpress.com
Both are great online resources for finding gas, without having to waste a ton of gas driving from one closed/empty station after another... Good Luck

Jeez, first Sandy, then Obama, now a 'noreaster? Talk about a 1-2-3 knockout punch!

well I am stuck at work on Cutter Mill. I usually use the local car services to get home every day and everyone is closed. If anyone happens to know anyone who is going from Cutter Mill to Lakeville Road/Northern Blvd (corner with all the gas stations), I just want to sleep in my bed tonight instead of in my office chair! Too far to walk but only 5-10 mins to drive straight up S Middle Neck Rd...

Locusts and pestilence next...

With the added snow load on trees, even more will lose power (or lose it again if they had it restored).

Is Cuomo outraged enough? We shall see. We shall see.

Heard from a few neighbours who managed to find LIPA guys who would talk that they estimate power to be restored to Salem on 11/24. Two more weeks. Where is the Governor on this issue? National news?
Melissa Pinto November 8, 2012 at 05:09 am
No I don't believe the fake fairy-tail of the fake characters called Mayans saying the work will end December 21st 2012 .

Does anyone know how montauk village faired during these two storms? Going out there for our anniversary but haven't heard anything regarding the state montauk is in.
Hotel tells me everything is fine? If anyone can help i appreciate it. Be safe.
tm November 8, 2012 at 01:52 pm
montauk fortunately faired pretty well. Power has been restored to just about everyone, and the damage was primarily due to the storm surge. All things considered, it could have been much worse.
christie nicolle November 8, 2012 at 02:17 pm
yes, robkoz, the Mayans' prediction it's the end of the world by Dec. 21, 2012 must be true, with Pretender Obama re-elected + devastating storms causing misery + delays, the signs are all there!
Waterway November 8, 2012 at 06:42 pm
Thanks tm.
